Tour Guide
- Tour guides escort visitors on sight-seeing,
educational or other tours and describe points of interest.
- Guides arrange entry to such places as museums,
government buildings and exhibitions, answer visitor questions, act as
interpreters, and may coordinate transportation and accommodations for
guests.
SKILLS
- Organizational skills, patience and the ability to
effectively communicate to visitors of different cultures are critical.
- Knowledge of points of interest, local history, and
customs are also important.
- The abundance of travelers from abroad has also
increased the need for multi-lingual guides in some areas.
EDUCATION
- There are no specific requirements for tour guides.
However, employers such as the National Park Service or museums may require
secondary or post-secondary educational degrees.
- Outdoor tour guides, such as whitewater or mountain
bike guides, may be required to have CPR and first-aid training.
OUTLOOK
- The tourism industry is sensitive to economic
downturns and international political crises, when travel plans are likely
to be deferred. Therefore, the number of job opportunities fluctuates.
