Nurse
All across the world, nursing is seen
as one of the noblest professions. In a hospital, from the general ward to the
operation theatre, nursing is the most important component of patient care.
Contrary to popular belief, nursing is not a second choice career for those
unable to gain entry in a medical college. The two professions, though
complementary, require separate skills and temperaments. Where the
doctor's contact with the patients is fleeting, nurses are expected to establish
and maintain a relationship with them.
- Working in the largest healthcare occupation,
registered nurses collaborate with other medical team members to promote and
restore patients' health.
- Registered nurses are often asked to document
symptoms, observe progress, assist physicians, administer medication,
provide physiological support and maintain sterile supplies.
- They may work as office registered nurses, nursing
home nurses, home health nurses, public health nurses, nurse practitioners
or the most popular, hospital nurses.
SKILLS
- Excellent diagnostic skills. Keeps knowledge of
treatment and protocols current.
- Builds trust and is patient, respectful and responsive
to client's needs.
- Practices proper methods of infection control and
sterilization.
- Capable of performing general procedural nursing
duties.
- Understands the functions and vital processes of the
human body.
- Experience administering medication.
- Works productively with others in the medical team.
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks.
- Demonstrates attentive and active listening skills.
EDUCATION
- A large number
of institutions in India today offer diploma, graduate and post
graduate courses in Nursing, as well as Midwifery
courses.
- The basic
eligibility for a B.Sc. in Nursing is a 10+2 with Biology, Physics and
Chemistry .The basic eligibility for a course in General
Nursing & Midwifery
(GNM) is also 10+2 with Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

OUTLOOK
- This occupation is projected to be one of the top 10
fastest-growing jobs through 2010. As Baby Boomers get into their later
