Librarian
Librarians
oversee the selection and organization of library materials.
They
assist people in finding a wide variety of scholarly and public information from
a number of resources.
Librarians
manage staff and develop and direct information programs and systems for the
public so all the information is organized to meet users’ needs.
SKILLS
- Prospective librarians should have excellent computer
skills such as word processing, database management and Internet research.
- They need strong organizational skills to efficiently
index and categorize library resources.
- Writing and public speaking skills are critical as
librarians often provide training and presentations both in and outside the
library.
EDUCATION
- A master’s degree in library science is usually
required; special librarians often need an additional graduate or
professional degree.
- Many colleges and universities offer library Science,
but employers often prefer graduates from reputed Universities.
OUTLOOK
- Slower
than average employment growth coupled with an increasing number of
graduates will result in more applicants competing for fewer jobs.
- Applicants for librarian jobs in large metropolitan
areas, where most graduates prefer to work, will face more competition;
those willing to work in rural areas should have better job prospects.
