Horticulturist

Horticulturists work to conserve natural resources and beautify the environment.

They plant, fertilize, tend and sometimes harvest flowers, shrubs and other plant life.

They work both indoors in greenhouses and hydroponics gardens, as well as outdoors in parks, estates, public gardens, flower farms and fruit orchards.

Some work primarily in landscaping.

SKILLS

  • Horticulturists should be organized, responsible, artistic, and possess an aptitude for science and research.
  • Some physical labor may be required, so it’s important to be in reasonably good shape.

EDUCATION

·         A bachelor’s degree in a science-related discipline is the minimum requirement for getting started in this field

·         Many horticulture degrees are in agricultural science, biology or chemistry.

·         A master’s or doctoral degree is all but required to advance in this field.

OUTLOOK

  • Research into genetically engineered crops, new pest control methods and effective crop planting should create an increase in the demand for horticulturists.
