                Florist

Florists create decorations with flowers and greenery for parties, weddings and other occasions based on the customer’s order.

While some florists work independently in freestanding flower shops, they can also be found managing floral departments for supermarkets or other retail stores.

Floral designers who own their own shops may do everything from growing and purchasing flowers to keeping financial records.

They may also work for office buildings, overseeing the floral arrangements and plant care.

SKILLS

  • A good sense of design and color are very important in this field, as is artistic ability.
  • Patience and people skills are additional important traits, particularly for florists dealing directly with the public.

EDUCATION

  • Vocational and technical schools offer programs in floral design, usually lasting less than a year.
  • Most floral designers learn their skills on the job.

OUTLOOK

  • Despite projected faster-than-average employment growth, there is usually strong competition for most jobs, because many people are attracted to design-related careers
