 Environmental Engineer

Environmental engineers are charged with designing and planning prevention, control and remediation of environmental health hazards.

Examples of projects environmental engineers tackle include waste treatment, site remediation and pollution control.

The job involves identifying sources of pollution, determining citizen/consumer requirements, preparing reports, recommending corrective measures and presenting information at hearings.

Environmental engineers will frequently specialize in one area, like air pollution, water pollution, landfill design, etc.

Jobs with environmental consulting companies often require significant travel, sometimes including international journeys.

SKILLS

  • The job of an environmental engineer is a multi-faceted one and, therefore, requires an array of disparate skills: knowledge of engineering and site development, understanding of environmental safety and environmental laws, database design.
  • An environmental engineer will also need to be a good writer because written reports are a big part of the job. In addition, an environmental engineer will likely need to be a good presenter of technical information.
  • Generally speaking, a love of the outdoors is highly recommended.

EDUCATION

  • Most environmental engineering jobs require degrees in one of the following subjects: environmental engineering, civil engineering, technical safety, chemical engineering, geology or environmental science. A master's degree is often preferred.

OUTLOOK

While the job security of environmental engineers is good, the ease of breaking into the profession varies over time based on market conditions which are affected by government policies, priorities, and funding. An outstanding academic record of accomplishment is always a plus.
