Mittal Steel

Mittal Steel has more than doubled in size since 2001. Its management has a proven track record and a strong vision of building the steel company of tomorrow. Today, with operations that span the globe, Mittal Steel offers a challenging, stimulating and fast-paced working environment - and career development opportunities unmatched in the world steel industry.

Mittal Steel is an entrepreneurial company. It encourages innovation and leadership within a culture that places great emphasis on personal development. its approach is to work together through:

  • Accountability – Management at each operation is held accountable for running the business and delivering results.
  • Open communications within a team approach – Openness and the sharing of information across functions and geographic boundaries are encouraged: the value of diverse ideas is recognised.
  • Empowerment – Those closest to the point of action are encouraged to make decisions. Managers are responsible for building the skills of their teams. Individuals perform best when they self-manage and delegate effectively.
  • Continuous improvement – Constant learning is supported by the Group-wide Knowledge Management Programme.

Mittal Steel has ambitious plans for future growth, it is vital that we develop a cadre of motivated managers that will lead the business in future years.

All top executives, general managers and managers within the business units have been through a ‘competency mapping’ process and are subject to an annual evaluation. This assesses them in three ways: their performance against business plan, their contribution to the wider group, and their achievement of qualitative targets in areas such as safety, talent building and succession planning.

The top five per cent are fast-tracked on a succession-linked career development plan that focuses on the top 200 positions in the group. They can expect to be moved around the company as they climb the management ladder.

Younger, more junior managers are also under the spotlight. In recent years, the company has created a pool of mobile young high-performers from Mittal Steel Temirtua who have been deployed at other group operations. The success of the programme means it will be replicated elsewhere in the group.

They are also keen to attract bright young talent from outside the group. In 2004, they stepped up our efforts in this area with the launch of the ‘Business Leaders Initiative’. Recruiting from leading business schools around the world, the programme identifies and grooms the next generation of managers. This is designed to speed the rate at which masters of business administration (MBAs) are recruited to the group. We look for people who combine specific skills with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Do you have what it takes to play a management role in one of the world’s fastest growing companies?
